Introduction
Every two
years, the ISU -International Stauden Union or International Hardy Plant Union-
gives a special award to promising novelties within perennials and ornamental
grasses.
Eligible
plants must have high ornamental value, be healthy and look good for as long as
possible.
Jan has
already won several awards with his JS® selections.
Here is a
picture of Jan with the former president Xavier Alleman (from Switzerland) and
the newly elected president Jonas Bengtsson (from Sweden) of the ISU Awards
committee. Jan snatched 3 of the 6 awards presented in Great Dixter (Great
Britain) in 2016.
In 2018,
Spruyt Select was also richly rewarded.
Here you
can see Jan together with his 5 awards at the ISU Trials in Poland.
He is
joined by Jonas Bengtsson (ISU president) and Alexander Michalik (Vitroflora, organised
the trials in Poland).
ISU Awards 2000 - 2012 - 2014
In 2000 Hosta JS® 'Harry Van Trier' was awarded an ISU Award.
The sturdiness and intense red colour of Persicaria ampl. 'JS Calor' PBR earned it an ISU Award in 2012.
Also in
2014, a JS® cultivar was chosen as one of the winners.
This time it was Panicum virgatum JS® 'Buffalo Green' PBR.
To
this day, this green and sturdy, half-high variety is still one of the hit
varieties in the Panicum range.
ISU Awards 2016
From 2014,
more than 60 different new varieties, from Europe and America, were planted at
Great Dixter. In August 2016, the plants were evaluated by 9 members of the
International ISU Plant Analysis Committee.
In the end,
6 plants received an award because -despite the heavy clay soil at the test
site- they were in perfect condition.
Jan's selections below received the award:
ISU Awards 2018
From 2016,
121 different new varieties were planted in Poland.
August 2018
was the time for these novelties as they were evaluated by ISU president Jonas
Bengtsson and the 10 other judges.
Especially
of the genera Heuchera, Echinacea, Monarda and Aster, several varieties were
submitted by growers all over Europe.
In the end,
10 plants were awarded, with 5 awards going to Jan Spruyt's selections.

selections below received the award:
ISU Awards 2020
From 2018,
53 different new varieties were planted in the Prague Botanical Garden, Czech
Republic.
Petr
Hanzelka and a team of 11 other perennial plant experts, judged the selections
submitted.
Growers from all over Europe submitted plants and 5 plants were awarded, with 1 award
going to Jan Spruyt's selection Silphium terebinthinaceum JS® 'Moa Ven Toh'.
Unfortunately, we don't have any Silphium terebinthinaceum JS® 'Moa Ven Toh' for sale at the moment.
We hope to offer it in near future.
ISU Awards 2022
There were
no awards for JS® selections in 2022. We have submitted some selections for
judging in 2024. As soon as these awards are known, you will read about them on
