Our concepts

Why use concepts?

The range of perennials is endless. Because every plant deserves its place in the garden, we have devised carefully composed planting concepts.

With these concepts you can very quickly find the right plant for your specific situation, or we can work out a design tailored for your garden.

These lists filter the right plants which can then be used creatively by further filtering by color, height and so on.

Combinations of different concepts are (sometimes) also possible.

Please note: When choosing your plants, it is important to determine the parameters for sunlight and soil as accurately as possible using the filters on our website . This can be done under the 'features' and 'habitat' tabs of the online catalog.

When looking for plants for a dry soil, keep in mind that the plants can only cope with this drought once they are mature and fully rooted.

Plants with habitat code 1 (dry) are not necessarily adapted to extreme conditions such as prolonged drought.
These plants may also need extra water in such exceptional situations.
Also keep in mind that certain species may react somewhat frost-sensitive in the first year.
These include Kalimeris and Aster ageratoides types.
These Asters are hardy, but with young plantings they are best covered the first year.

If you need more information about this, you can contact us.

Description concepts

Bee garden

This concept includes all plants visited by different species of wild bees, bumble bees and / or honey bees.

Many different types of plants attract bees, so it is important to use the other filters (height of foliage, flowering period, habitat, ...) to build a beautiful and long-lived plant community.

Tree Outline

The unpaved zone around the trunk of a tree with enough light and water.

There is more or less light, depending on the situation.

Dry shade

A situation such as under tree crowns and along the south-east, on the shady side of walls.

English border

This concept is typical for the English cottage garden.

Rampant plants are also included in this concept, because the plants are divided every 3 years in an English border.

More fertilizer is used in an English border, so plants for a poor, dry soil have no place here.

Filter even further for sun exposure for the desired habitat.

Grave planting

A collection of plants that often stay low, ground covering by nature and tolerate drought.

Filter even further on sun exposure and habitat to make the right selection.

Green roof semi-intensive

Substrate thickness between 15 and 30 cm. Low-growing, drought-resistant grasses and perennials. Often also suitable for vertical gardens.

Below is a summary of other concepts that can often also be used on a semi-intensive green roof:

  • Indigenous
  • Coastal plants
  • Macho
  • Mono planting
  • Prairie
  • Rubble plants
  • Steppe
  • Sub-Mediterranean plants
  • Tread plants
  • Perennial flower meadow
  • Butterfly garden

Green roof extensive

Plantings with succulents, grasses and / or grassland plants on flat or sloping roofs with substrate thickness of 15 cm at most.

Green roof intensive

There are many possibilities on an intensive green roof, since the thickness of the substrate allows even trees and shrubs.

Below is a list of concepts that can be used on an intensive green roof, depending on the desired final image:

  • Bee garden
  • English border
  • Indigenous
  • Mono planting
  • Macho
  • Prairie
  • Rugged landscape
  • Savannah
  • Butterfly garden

Autumn colors

All plants that stand out thanks to a beautiful discoloration in the fall fit into this concept. This includes grasses, perennials and ferns.

Different types of plants have beautiful autumn colors, but that does not necessarily mean they can thrive in the same place. It is therefore important to use the other filters (height, efflorescence, habitat, ...) to build a beautiful and long-lived plant community.

Indigenous

Within this concept all plants that naturally grow in Belgium since the Last Ice Age are included.

Please note: some plants are only native to Flanders or Wallonia, others within the whole of Belgium.

This concept has been optimized but is only a guide. We cannot be held responsible for any errors in this difficult theme, as different scientific sources contradict each other.

If you want to go into this in more detail, we recommend the "Atlas of the Flora of Flanders", on which we based our classification.

Source used: Van Landuyt W., Hoste I., Vanhecke L., Van den Bremt P. Vercruysse W. & De Beer D. (ed.) 2006. Atlas of the Flora of Flanders and the Brussels region. National Botanic Garden and the Institute for Nature and Forest Research i.s.m. Flo.Wer vzw.

It is important to use the other filters (height, efflorescence, habitat, ...) to build a beautiful and long-lived plant community.

Indigenous plants blossom during the first part of the spring / summer and often disseminate fiercely.

Coastal plants

Plants on the coast must be able to tolerate salt and wind.

On the other hand, they often enjoy a mild climate.

Macho

Extremely strong plants that require little maintenance and cover the soil within two years. No mixed planting, but large areas with the same species. Most plants tolerate pruning and treading.

The maintenance is specific.

Many different types of plants are 'macho', so it is important to use the other filters (efflorescence, habitat, ...) to build a beautiful and long-lived plant community.

You can also consult this concept without a subscription.

For more info, consult our flyer: The Macho garden

Mono planting

These plants can be used in larger areas without a problem.

It is important to use the other filters (efflorescence, habitat, ...) to build a beautiful and long-lived plant community.

You can also consult this concept without a subscription.

Wall plants

These plants occur naturally on the head and flanks or at the base of mainly old walls.

Artificially constructed walls can also be planted well with this.

You can also consult this concept without a subscription.

Striking leaf colors

These plants stand out thanks to the color of the leaves that deviate from the classic green.

Many different types of plants have a different leaf color, but therefore do not yet fit within the same situation.

It is therefore important to use the other filters (leaf height, efflorescence, habitat, ...) to build a beautiful and long-lived plant community.

Striking foliage

These plants stand out thanks to the size of the leaf and / or the special shape.

Many different types of plants can be labeled as leaf plants, but therefore do not yet fit within the same situation.

It is therefore important to use the other filters (leaf height, efflorescence, habitat, ...) to build a beautiful and long-lived plant community.

Prairie

A unique, sustainable plant community. Prairie is inspired by the North American grasslands in continental climate and translated into our gardens with lots of color in summer and fall, waving grasses and beautiful autumn hues.

We integrate American, Asian and European plant genera.

When choosing plants, we take into account the rather maritime climate in our regions. Because of the unique choice of plants and often working in 'mix', the plants can be maintained in the same way.

Certainly filter  further by habitat, type of soil (dry, fresh, moist) and height of the foliage to build a beautiful and sustainable plant community.

For more info, consult our flyer: The Prairie garden.

Rubble plants

Plantings  for low-nutrient, mineral soils (stony, natural or artificial soil) with little organic material. Tolerates drought . Maintenance friendly.

Rugged landscape

Nutrient-rich soil in full sun or partial shade. Floriferous, lush and robust planting. Extensive management.

Savannah

Similar to prairie, but there are also shrubs and / or trees that cast (light) shade.

Steppe

Suitable for mineral-rich, dry and fertile soils. The plants stay lower and are often evergreen. Extremely strong plants that require little maintenance and cover the soil quickly. Both mixed planting (with a very limited number of species) and sectional planting are possible. Some plants tolerate pruning and treading.

Maintenance is plant-specific.

Stinzen plants

This group of plants (mostly spring flowers) were originally introduced into a region by humans (often farms, presbytery gardens, castle gardens, etc.) and have been able to maintain themselves or become wild.

Sub-Mediterranean plants

These plants enjoy warm, dry, sheltered pitches with well-drained soil.

Dry in  summer and an inert covering layer (eg lava) on the surface provides extra warmth.

Tread plants

Ideal for unpaved paths and semi-pavements such as grass concrete tiles. Certainly filter further on sun exposure and habitat.

Perennial flower meadow

A mix of grasses and flowering perennials. For full sun and more or less nutrient-rich, fresh soil. A good, strong alternative to the sown flower meadow.

Butterfly garden

Important host plants and / or nectar pollen suppliers for butterflies.

Different species of plants have this property, so it is important to use the other filters (height of leaves, efflorescence, habitat, ...) to build a beautiful and long-lived plant community.

Shoreline
This group includes both bank and marsh plants. An important criterion is whether the plants are standing with their feet in water permanently or temporarily. So definately filter further in habitat.

Woodland

This group of plants grows naturally in forest or forest edge biotope. Mostly spring flowers in pastel shades.

For more info, consult our flyer: The Woodland Garden.
